WALK TO END HYDROCEPALUS
Uniting Communities. Advancing Hope. Fueling Progress.
In 2024, the Hydrocephalus Association’s signature grassroots event—the WALK to End Hydrocephalus—brought together more than 7,600 participants across 42 events nationwide, representing over 862 teams. Powered by our incredible network of volunteers, families, medical professionals, and advocates, the WALKs raised over $1.8 million in support of HA’s critical research, education, and community support initiatives.
These events continue to serve as a cornerstone of our mission—fostering awareness, empowering families, and raising essential funds to improve lives and drive progress toward a cure.
Celebrating WALK Anniversaries
Chicago – 20 Years of Impact
In 2024, the Chicago WALK celebrated its 20th anniversary, a powerful milestone in our movement. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of participants and volunteers, with WALK leaders Stacey Buckner, Katie Cook, and Sherry Reising, this event has raised over $1.1 million in two decades. Together, we honor the legacy of this community and its continued commitment to making a difference.
Cincinnati – 10 Years Strong
The Cincinnati WALK marked its 10th anniversary this year, reaching nearly $440,000 raised since its inception. This achievement reflects a decade of dedication from the local community and inspires continued momentum for the future. Many thanks to our committed leaders Heidi and Mike Knapke!
Growing the Movement: New WALK Locations
Virginia Beach – A First Step Toward a New Tradition
On November 3, the Virginia Beach community gathered for its first-ever WALK to End Hydrocephalus, bringing together families and supporters from across the region. This new location now offers a closer option for those who previously traveled to D.C. or the Carolinas. Special thanks to Natasha Buchanan, whose leadership brought this vision to life.
“Serving as WALK Chair has been humbling and inspiring. When my son was diagnosed, I felt isolated, but HA gave us a community. I’m committed to bringing that same support to others because my son, Zander, and everyone facing hydrocephalus deserve better treatment options—and a future without ‘another brain surgery.’”— Natasha Buchanan, Virginia Beach WALK Chair
Indianapolis – A Welcome Return
On November 2, Indianapolis rejoined the WALK movement after a brief hiatus, reigniting community spirit and support. Thanks to the dedication of Kelly Leard, Jennifer Reid, and the Indiana University committee, this revitalized event was a resounding success and a sign of strong things to come.
Community Partnerships Making a Difference
WINGSTOP + The Garn Family: Fueling Awareness in Utah

On September 23, the Garn family—longtime HA supporters—celebrated the grand opening of two new WINGSTOP locations in the Salt Lake City area. In collaboration with all Utah WINGSTOP stores, they raised an incredible $19,000 to benefit HA’s mission.
We are grateful to the Garn family and WINGSTOP for helping us spread awareness and build community. Stay tuned for an even bigger impact by WINGSTOP in September 2025!
“The WALK has become such a meaningful event for our family to support Peyton and raise awareness in our community. We’ve loved meeting others affected by hydrocephalus—it’s a day we look forward to every year.” — Shantil and Nate Garn
A Thanksgiving Tradition: Thanks For Running 5K
Held every Thanksgiving morning in Medford, Massachusetts, the Thanks For Running 5K is a beloved event hosted by the Maynard family for over 20 years. With homemade turkey soup, local bakery pies, and a joyful spirit, this annual run has raised over $100,000 in support of hydrocephalus research and awareness.
“We aim to keep the event loving, joyful, and we are especially thankful for the support of our race day friends.” — Amy Maynard, race organizer
This family-led event exemplifies the power of community-driven action.
Walking from Anywhere: The Rise of the Virtual WALK
Participation in the Virtual WALK to End Hydrocephalus continues to grow, making it easier than ever for supporters to get involved—no matter their location. This year, the Buchanan family led a beautiful tribute to their daughter, Layla Grace, walking in her honor and raising vital funds and awareness.
“It was a beautiful day to celebrate Layla Grace and others living with hydrocephalus! Thank you to everyone who donated and walked with us.” — Bethany Buchanan | #TeamLaylaGrace
Their story is one of many demonstrating how the WALK can unite families from coast to coast—and beyond.
Looking Ahead
The WALK to End Hydrocephalus continues to grow as a nationwide force for awareness, unity, and progress. Whether in-person or virtual, every step taken brings us closer to better treatments, stronger support systems, and ultimately, a cure. We are deeply grateful to our volunteers, donors, sponsors, and families who make this movement possible.
Together, we walk. Together, we fight. Together, we find hope.
